Summary:
Dr. Mohamed Ali Al-Khawlani received the Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Agronomy and Plant Breeding from Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana, USA. Immediately, after graduation from Krosnadar Agricultural Institute, USSR, he was employed by Agricultural Research and Extension Authority in 1979 as agronomist. Latter on, He worked as wheat and barley breeder after getting Ph.D. degree, in 1988. 1n 1994 he appointed as assistant professor in Crop Science Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sana’a University. In 2004 he promotion to Associate Professor. He was appointed as Department Head for the periods 2008- 2011, and 2018-2020.

1=June, 1985- May, 1988 Studied at Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana, USA, and received Ph.D. degree in agronomy and Plant Breeding
2- June, 1983- May, 1985 Studied at Montana State University Bozeman, Montana, USA and received M.Sc. degree in Agronomy and Plant Breeding.
3- September, 1973 – April, 1979 Studied in Krosnadar Agricultural Institute, Krosnadar, USSR, and received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Agro-chemistry.
Experience:
- May- December 2017 participated in FAO field study mission to evaluate the impact of protracted war on the food security and agriculture production. Specifically, I work as cereal team leader that took the responsibility of studying the production of wheat and sorghum: Challenges and impact of protracted conflict on the value chain of the two cereal crops. The study was under the program: Food Security Information System (FSIS).
- May – December, 2013 work as FAO National consultant for implementing the FAO project titled “Protection and restoration of essential agriculture livelihood assets of displaced families and their host communities. The project was successfully by IOM in Abyan Governorate. The project was aiming to improve coping mechanism of returnees by safeguarding, restoring, and improving their agriculture production assets.
- November 1997. Short term consultation for the UNDP- IUCN Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan Project in ” Assessment of Agricultural Biological diversity in the Republic of Yemen, I- Plant production part”.
- 1996 Short-term consultation for Agricultural Research and Extension Authority to evaluate the Agricultural Research activities in the Eastern Region.
- 1996 Short term consultation for GTZ and participated in Project Progress Review mission to evaluate the project performance of ” INNOVATION DEVELOPMENT IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR”.
- 1995 Short term consultation for the Word Bank in formulation of a project “Seed and agricultural services in Yemen”
- 1993 -Short term consultation for the GTZ in formulation of an Appraisal for the project ” INNOVATION DEVELOPMENT IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR”. This project is a part of the technical cooperation of Yemen and Federal Republic of Germany.
- 1991 Participated in a mission to evaluate Seed Multiplication System in the Republic of Yemen. Final report of the mission was submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture And Irrigation.
- 1996 Participated in preparation of GTZ project document for the second phase “ Innovation Development in Agriculture Sector project” based mainly on community participation and promotion of farmer initiatives to solve their own problems.
- September 1998- December 1999 Works as National Project Coordinator for UNDP- IUCN project for preparation of “ National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan”.
- January 2000- December 2001worked as National Program Officer for World Food Program (WFP).
- involved in Wheat and barley variety development screening for drought resistant short maturing high yielding wheat and barley varieties
- 1990- research for controlling yellow rust in central high land in Yemen
- Participated in two IBPGR Missions for collecting Local crop and land races in Yemen. Characterizations of the collected accessions were done at the Research Station in Dhamar.
- 1993 directly involved in planning and execution of a breeding programs of wheat and barley, which include early generation selection and variety evaluation at the Research Station in Dhamar.
- Conducted out station verification trials for testing advanced varieties of wheat and barley at different Agro-Ecological Zones.
- Conducted several Varieties by Environment interaction studies associated with Sorghum and Millet Project in Dhamar. The results of these studies were presented at regional meetings in Yemen, Egypt, and Sudan.
- Involved in breeder and foundation seed production of released varieties of wheat. Using head-to-row method for production of A-line, and B and C block for production of breeder and foundation seed of the released
- Worked as lecturer of Several courses taught at the Faculty of Agriculture, Sanaa University are:- Agro Ecology, Use and Maintenance of terraces, Genetics, Plant physiology, and Principles of Plant Breeding. In addition, supervisions of several Graduate students.
- 1979-1983- Work as a research assistant in agriculture research station Taiz Republic of Yemen worked on wheat and barley breeding program and counterpart with Dr-Ilham talaot and Dr-Jamal fuad world bank experts in plant breeding
- July 1988 – November 1993 Employed as Wheat and Barley Breeder, Cereal Research Division, Central Highland Research Station, Dhamar, Republic of Yemen.
- January 1989 – 1990 Worked as National Cereal Research Coordinator at Agricultural Research Authority, Dhamar, Republic of Yemen.
- October, 1990 – October, 1993 Worked as Technical Manager at the Central Highland Research Station, Dhamar, Republic of Yemen
- October 1993 – Present Time working as Faculty staff Member at the Faculty of Agriculture, Sanaa University. My direct responsibility is lecturing in the subjects: Genetics, principle of Plant Breeding, Oregon and crop classification, and Agriculture in Dry Areas.
