Sana’a University Crop Science Students Gain Field Experience in Yemen’s Coffee-Growing Regions

As part of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment at Sana’a University’s commitment to strengthening practical learning and connecting academic knowledge with real-world agricultural practice, students from the Department of Crop Science and Genetic Improvement undertook a scientific field visit to several agricultural areas in Sana’a Governorate, including Bani Matar, Al-Haymatayn, Manakha, Haraz, and Qemat al-Hateeb.
The visit aimed to provide students with first-hand knowledge of the governorate’s diverse agricultural environments and crops, while giving them an opportunity to explore Yemen’s coffee cultivation, its varieties, and its genetic and environmental diversity. The students also learned about agricultural practices used in coffee cultivation and management, including methods for preparing planting pits and establishing seedlings in permanent field locations.
The visit also included an overview of the major crops cultivated in the areas visited, including almonds, maize, barley, and wheat. Students examined the effects of elevation, topography, climatic conditions, and rainfall on agricultural production, as well as the importance of agricultural terraces, dams, and water infrastructure in harvesting rainwater and utilizing it to support crop production.
The visit highlighted the importance of conserving and documenting the genetic diversity of Yemeni coffee as a nationally valuable agricultural resource with significant economic and environmental value. It also contributed to developing students’ practical and research skills and strengthening their ability to study agricultural resources and diverse farming environments through direct field observation.
The students were accompanied throughout the visit by Mr. Mohammed Fadel Al-Ayashi from the Department of Crop Science and Genetic Improvement. He provided scientific guidance and explanations about the areas and crops observed during the visit, helping maximize its educational value and strengthen the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
