Environmental Sciences Department at the College of Petroleum Organizes a Field Visit for Its Students to the University of Science and Technology Hospital to Enhance the Practical Aspect

As part of the College of Petroleum and Natural Resources’ keenness to enhance the practical aspect for its students and link academic outcomes to professional reality, and under the generous sponsorship of the College Deanship, the Department of Environmental Sciences organized a field visit for its students to the University of Science and Technology Hospital in Sana’a, within the practical applications of the “Waste Management” course.
The visit was supervised by Prof. Dr. Hisham Mohammed Naji, Head of the Environmental Sciences Department, and Dr. Maryam Ahmed Taher, course instructor, with the aim of familiarizing students with the best practices followed in managing medical and hazardous waste within health institutions, and learning about the environmental and health procedures approved in accordance with international standards.
They were received by: Dr. Nasser Al-Qadri, Director of Marketing and Public Relations; Dr. Zayed Al-Badr Al-Jamil, Infection Control Expert; Mr. Farooq Yaqoob, Head of the Marketing Department; and Mr. Mansoor Al-Bashiri, Head of the Services Department.
Representatives of the hospital management welcomed the college’s academics and students, stressing the importance of partnership and cooperation between academic institutions and the health sector in the fields of field training and qualification. They also provided a detailed explanation of the hospital’s leading experience in dealing with medical and hazardous waste, starting from segregation operations using color-coded containers and bags, through collection mechanisms, temporary storage, and internal transport, up to the stages of treatment, sterilization, and final disposal, along with a comprehensive review of the preventive controls that guarantee the safety of staff, patients, and the environment.
The visit included a field tour covering various relevant hospital facilities, during which Dr. Zayed Al-Jamil and Mr. Farooq Yaqoob accompanied the students to closely observe segregation sites and temporary storage warehouses, and to gain practical knowledge on waste classification methods according to standard specifications. The sterilization unit and the incinerator were also visited, where students listened to a detailed explanation regarding the modern technologies used, operating mechanisms, and approved safety procedures.
This visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to link theoretical concepts to field applications, and to acquire practical experience that contributes to developing their skills in the field of sustainable medical waste management and environmental protection.
At the end of the visit, the Head of the Environmental Sciences Department, the course instructor, and the students expressed their sincere thanks and appreciation to the management of the University of Science and Technology Hospital and all its staff for the warm reception, organization, and distinguished scientific explanation, noting that these field activities constitute a fundamental pillar for preparing qualified environmental cadres equipped with the necessary skills to serve the community and protect public health.
