PhD Degree Awarded to Mr. Abdulkarim Al-Ammari in Business Administration

Mr. Abdulkarim Ali Naji Musleh Al-Ammari was awarded a PhD degree in the major of Business Administration for his dissertation titled, “The Impact of Integrating Green Human Resource Management Practices and Environmental Management System on Sustainable Development in Cement Factories in Yemen,” which was submitted to Center of Business Administration for Graduate Studies – Sana’a University. The PhD dissertation defense was held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following members:

The dissertation aimed to identify the impact of integrating Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) Practices and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) on Sustainable Development (SD) within the context of cement factories in Yemen.
The dissertation specifically explored:
- GHRM Dimensions: Green recruitment, green training, green compensation and rewards, green performance appraisal, and environmental participation.
- EMS Dimensions: Environmental policy, planning, implementation and operation, checking and corrective action, and management review.
- SD Dimensions: Environmental dimension, economic dimension, and social dimension.
Key Findings
The dissertation reached the following main findings:
- The level of GHRM practices in Yemeni cement factories was moderate.
- The descending order of the GHRM dimensions’ application level was: green training, followed by green performance appraisal, then green compensation and rewards, green recruitment, and finally environmental participation.
- The degree of implementing the EMS in Yemeni cement factories was relatively high.
- The application order of the EMS dimensions was: implementation and operation, followed by management review, then planning, checking and corrective action, and finally environmental policy.
- The status of Sustainable Development in the cement factories was also found to be relatively high.
- The descending order of achieving the SD dimensions was: the environmental dimension, followed by the economic dimension, and then the social dimension.
- The study confirmed a significant impact of GHRM practices on Sustainable Development in the factories.
- A significant impact of the Environmental Management System on Sustainable Development was also confirmed.
- The integration of GHRM practices and the EMS was found to contribute a partial impact to achieving sustainable development in Yemen’s cement factories.
Recommendations
The dissertation concludes with the following recommendations:
- Necessity of raising awareness among management and employees about the importance of sustainable development.
- Integrating environmental criteria into all human resource processes, including recruitment, performance appraisal, and compensation.
- Importance of moving beyond mere compliance with legislation to adopting innovative environmental initiatives.
- Allocating necessary resources for these initiatives and developing effective mechanisms for monitoring and corrective action.
- Achieving a comprehensive balance between the environmental, economic, and social dimensions to enhance sustainable development in the cement industry sector in Yemen.
The PhD dissertation was examined and recommended by the Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The PhD defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, interested students, the candidate’s colleagues, and family members.
