Third- and fourth-year students from the Departments of Plant Protection and Horticulture & Its Techniques at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at Sana’a University participated in an academic field trip to Khawlan District, including Bani Bahlul and Bait Uqab areas. The trip was supervised by Eng. Ilham Araf, Eng. Tayseer Al-Sanhani, and Eng. Safaa Hadwan.
The trip aimed to strengthen practical application and align course concepts with agricultural realities through direct observation, field exercises, and discussions on local farming practices.
As part of the practical component of the Viticulture course for Horticulture students, participants learned about grape cultivation and production techniques. Topics covered included vine training methods, training systems, seasonal timing, pruning techniques, irrigation practices, and routine crop management required throughout growth and production cycles.
Students also examined field practices across local vineyards, emphasizing the importance of selecting training and pruning methods tailored to specific vine structures, varieties, and environmental conditions to optimize growth, yield, and crop quality.
In the Plant Protection track, students identified key plant pests, insects, and disease symptoms. The instruction emphasized early field diagnosis, observation techniques, and cultural practices designed to limit pest and disease transmission to preserve crop health.
The field trip provided an interactive learning environment where students engaged in hands-on experience and discussed agricultural practices with their instructors, broadening their understanding of crop production and protection.
These academic trips support the Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment’s objective to integrate practical learning into the curriculum, offering students field experience to complement their academic studies and prepare them for the agricultural job market.
