As part of efforts to strengthen practical training and connect academic knowledge with real-world applications, students from the Department of Horticulture and Technologies conducted a field visit to the greenhouses dedicated to the production of local seeds belonging to Suhul Yemen Foundation, located at the General Directorate of Plant Protection. The visit was organized within a scientific training program supervised by Prof. Hassan Al-Dubai, Professor of Plant Breeding, Improvement, and Seed Production. During the visit, students explored the latest technologies used in the production and improvement of vegetable varieties. They also learned about plant hybridization mechanisms and modern scientific methods for producing local seeds aimed at developing high-quality, high-yield crop varieties that are resistant to environmental conditions and agricultural pests.
The program included practical training on self-pollination and cross-pollination techniques in several vegetable crops. Students participated in hands-on applications involving tomato and cucumber crops, where they learned about isolation procedures, pollination techniques, and genetic control in plants. They also observed the evaluation stages of hybrid varieties within greenhouses and specialized nurseries.
In addition, students had the opportunity to examine several locally developed varieties of zucchini, cucumber, and tomato crops, and to learn about the scientific standards used in evaluating varieties in terms of productivity, fruit quality, tolerance to environmental conditions, and suitability for the local market.
The visit highlighted the importance of field-based education in preparing qualified agricultural professionals, as it provides practical experience that enhances students’ applied skills and strengthens their ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications in the agricultural sector.
At the end of the visit, the students of the Department of Horticulture and Technologies expressed their appreciation to Prof. Hassan Al-Dubai for his scientific efforts and continuous commitment to advancing students’ practical training. They also extended their thanks to the General Directorate of Plant Protection and Suhul Yemen Foundation for their warm reception and for providing valuable practical knowledge and experience that enriched the students’ academic and applied learning.
