Third- and fourth-year students from the Department of Horticulture and Its Technologies at Sana’a University conducted an educational field trip to traditional vineyard farms across the Khawlan District, visiting Bani Bahloul, Bait Uqab, and Wadi Bir Al-Shar’ain.
The field visit was supervised by Prof. Hassan Abduljabbar Al-Duba’i and Eng. Elias Manea Al-Mida’mah.
Students examined traditional indigenous grape varieties and learned about local agricultural heritage and various vine training systems, including trellis, cordon, head, and cane training methods. The trip also covered seasonal vineyard operations, plant growth stages, morphological characterization, and propagation techniques such as seeds, cuttings, and layering.
Additionally, students discussed local marketing challenges with farmers and observed traditional grape drying and raisin production techniques, bridging theoretical concepts from their Grape Production course with real-world field practice.
The department expressed its appreciation to the local community in Khawlan, particularly Mr. Mulatif Al-Najjar, for their warm reception and dedication to preserving local agricultural traditions.
