Faculty of Education and Applied Sciences - Arhab | SU
In line with the state’s focus and policy on expanding access to university education, Sana’a University sought to establish branch faculties in a number of governorates, in response to the increase in the number of students enrolling in higher education. This was done to alleviate the burden that builds up annually on the university’s faculties within the capital, Sana’a, and to provide access to university education for the widest possible sections of Yemeni society. In line with this policy, the Faculty of Education – Arhab was established. At the start of the 1993/1994 academic year, the number of students enrolled there did not exceed 700, studying across seven academic departments, namely: Qur’anic Studies, Arabic, English, Social Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
In the following academic year, the number of students enrolled at the college rose to 701. A process of developing and updating the curriculum and academic programs accompanied this increase in student numbers. The Departments of History and Geography were established to replace the Department of Social Sciences at the start of the first semester of 1995/1996. The number of students enrolled at the college rose to around 6,000 in the academic year 2008/2009, and it comprised the Departments of Arabic, English, History, Geography, Quranic Studies, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Educational and Psychological Sciences (a department supporting the other departments).
With the start of the first semester of the 2012/2013 academic year, the Department of Islamic Studies was established. Moreover, with the start of the first semester of the 2020/2021 academic year, the Department of Computer Information Technology was established. The name of the faculty was changed from the Faculty of Education to the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Applied Sciences. The faculty now comprises ten academic departments and the Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences, which supports all departments that train teachers in the various specializations mentioned above, with the exception of the Department of Information Technology, as this is a technical specialism in the field of computing.
The programs offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Applied Sciences – Arhab award the Bachelor of Education degree in the following specializations:
Arabic, English, Qur’anic Studies, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Islamic Studies
As well as a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Technology.
