Historical Overview

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Education, Humanities, and Applied Sciences – Khawlan was established in the academic year 1997/1998 as one of the branch colleges of Sana’a University, with the purpose of expanding opportunities for higher education and reducing the pressure on the faculties in the capital. Today, it offers programs in education, humanities, and applied sciences, aiming to prepare qualified graduates who serve society and contribute to development.

In line with the Yemeni government’s interest in expanding the base of higher education, Sana’a University sought to establish branch colleges in several governorates, responding to the increasing number of students enrolling in higher education. This initiative aimed to ease the annual burden on the university’s faculties in the capital and provide access to higher education for a wider segment of Yemeni society. Within this framework, the Faculty of Education, Arts, and Sciences – Khawlan was founded, comprising three colleges (Education, Arts, and Sciences). It was envisioned as the nucleus of a multidisciplinary university and a complement to Sana’a University, offering education at the same academic level and in accordance with quality standards and international criteria.

Establishment: The faculty was established in the academic year 1997/1998 by University Council Resolution No. (421), issued in its session held on August 6, 1997.

Development Stages: According to the founding resolution, the faculty initially included three colleges: Education, Arts, and Sciences, with the following departments: Arabic Language and Literature (Education, Arts), English Language and Literature (Education, Arts), Mathematics (Education), Physics (Education), Chemistry (Education), Educational Sciences. Two years later, the following were added: History (Education, Arts), Qur’an and its Sciences (Education). In the academic year 2005/2006, the Department of Computer Science (College of Sciences) was opened. In 2019, the name was changed from Faculty of Education, Arts, and Science – Khawlan to Faculty of Education, Humanities, and Applied Sciences – Khawlan by University President Resolution No. (404). In 2021/2022, two new departments were established: Computer Teacher Education (College of Education), Life Sciences (Biology) (College of Education).

Current Departments: College of Education: Arabic Language, English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, History, Qur’an and its Sciences, Computer Teacher Education, Life Sciences (Biology), Educational Sciences. College of Humanities: Arabic Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, History and International Relations. College of Applied Sciences: Computer Science.

The faculty aspires to become the nucleus of a future university and a distinguished academic institution in higher education, scientific research, and community service. It seeks to achieve a prominent position among higher education institutions by developing its academic programs on solid scientific foundations, aligned with international standards of quality. Through intellectual and professional excellence and the use of modern technologies, it aims to fulfill its mission, meet societal needs, contribute to national progress, and participate in achieving comprehensive development goals.
