Ms. Ethar Abdullah Mohammed Nassar was awarded a Master’s degree with an overall average of (Excellent), in the major of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, from Department of Orthodontics, Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Sana’a University, for her thesis titled “The Effect of Mesial Drift of the Posterior Dental Segment on the Impaction of the Lower Third Molar in Orthodontic Patients Treated with Extraction Protocol.” The viva voce was held on Thursday, Shawwal 26, 1446 Hijri, corresponding to April 24, 2025.
The MA viva-voce committee comprised the following members:
– Prof. Rami Abdulrahman Ishaq (Supervisor),
– Assoc. Prof. Mohammed Al-Labani (Internal Examiner and Chair), and
– Assoc. Prof. Abdulhaq Al-Hussani (External Examiner).
The thesis aimed to evaluate the impact of the forward movement (mesial drift) of posterior teeth on the impaction of the lower third molar (wisdom tooth) in orthodontic patients treated using an extraction protocol.
The study findings included a significant improvement in the angle of the lower third molar in the extraction group following orthodontic treatment. In addition, the angle of the lower second molar before treatment showed a statistically significant inverse relationship with the change in the angle of the lower third molar.
This study concluded with several recommendations, most notably:
- Conducting further prospective studies with long-term follow-up after the completion of treatment.
- Undertaking three-dimensional studies, given the limitations of two-dimensional radiography.
- Considering facial variations, skeletal classifications, and other factors that may influence the angle of the third molar.
The defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, interested individuals, as well as the candidate’s colleagues and family members.
