Sana’a – 2 Dhu Al-Hijjah 1446 Hijri / May 29, 2025
Sana’a University’s Cardiac and Catheterization Center today organized a specialized scientific symposium on cardiovascular diseases, coinciding with the operational launch of the latest cardiac catheterization device in Yemen. This marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s health and educational infrastructure.
In his speech during the event, Sana’a University Rector, Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bukhaiti, emphasized that the university’s Cardiac Center is a true catalyst for medical and research development in Yemen. He stressed that the university considers it a strategic center due to the specialized medical services it provides and the academic role it plays in qualifying Yemeni cadres according to the highest standards.
The University Rector pointed out that the university, in collaboration with the Capital Secretariat, seeks to transform the Center into a national model comparable to Al-Qasr Al-Aini Hospital in Cairo in terms of qualification, equipment, and performance quality. He affirmed the university leadership’s commitment to providing full support to the Center by supplying equipment and expanding training and postgraduate programs.
“The presence of such a center within a university hospital,” said the Rector, “provides medical students and Yemeni cadres with a valuable educational and practical opportunity, and offers the community advanced services for which Yemeni citizens previously had to travel abroad.”
The inaugural session was attended by Prof. Ibrahim Luqman, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education & Scientific Research; Prof. Zaid Al-Warith, the Rector’s Assistant for Centers’ Affairs; Mr. Adel Al-Hababi, the Rector’s Assistant for Media Affairs; Dr. Mohammed Dhaifallah, Secretary-General of the Council for Academic Accreditation & Qyality Assurance (CAQA); and Dr. Abdul Latif Abu Talib, Director General of Kuwait University Hospital. During the event, Dr. Hamoud Obad, Secretary General of the Capital Secretariat, expressed his pride in the Center’s achievements, stressing that supporting the health sector, especially in specialized fields like cardiology, is a priority for the leadership and the Supreme Political Council.
The Secretary General of the Capital Secretariat stated, “What is being achieved today is a practical translation of the directives of the Leader of the Revolution and the President of the Supreme Political Council to improve specialized health services and provide them free of charge or at nominal prices for Yemeni citizens, who can no longer bear the burdens of traveling abroad.”
Dr. Obad praised the Yemeni professionals working at the Cardiac Center and their role in instilling hope in patients’ hearts. He indicated that the Capital Secretariat will continue to support the Center and that there is a plan to purchase the first cardiac electrophysiology device in Yemen next year, funded by the local authority.
Dr. Salah Al-Showki, Director of the Cardiac Center, and his deputy, Dr. Nader Al-Amery, also delivered speeches in which they commended the support from Sana’a University and the Capital Secretariat in providing the modern catheterization device at a cost of 200 million Yemeni Riyals, which will enable the Center to perform specialized and complex surgeries that were previously referred abroad.
Dr. Al-Showki affirmed that the Center is steadily progressing towards becoming the primary reference in Yemen for heart diseases and medical training, thanks to official support and the cooperation of its distinguished staff.
The scientific symposium was attended by an elite group of Yemeni and Egyptian academics and consultants, most notably:
– Dr. Hazem Khamis, Cardiology Consultant and Director of Wadi El-Nile Specialized Hospital in Egypt.
– Dr. Hossam Kandil, Head of the Cardiology Department at Al-Qasr Al-Aini Hospital and former Chairman of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology.
– Dr. Jamila Nasr, Professor of Cardiology at Suez Canal University and Scientific Officer for the Egyptian Board.
The scientific day witnessed the discussion of more than 16 specialized research papers addressing topics as the diagnosis and treatment of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes, the use of blood thinners, heart diseases in pregnant women and the elderly, and the importance of medical imaging in diagnostic catheterization.
The event concluded by emphasizing the importance of continuing scientific conferences, expanding international partnerships, and investing in national expertise, all of which contribute to solidifying the Cardiac Center’s position as a leading medical and academic institution serving Yemen and its people.
