Master’s Degree Awarded to Ms. Ibtisam Musleh Hasan Al-Basarah in Sociology

Ms. Ibtisam Musleh Hasan Hussein Al-Basarah was awarded a Master’s degree in sociology with a grade of (Excellent) and an average of (92%) for her thesis titled “Yemeni Working Woman and the Conflict of Social Roles: An Approach to the Transformation of Women’s Roles in the Capital Secretariat (Sana’a)“, which was submitted to Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Sana’a University. The defense was held on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following members:

The thesis aimed to study the social role conflict experienced by Yemeni working women, its impact on them, their families, and society, and to identify the social, political, economic, cultural, and legal transformations that have contributed to the changing role of women in Yemeni society.
The thesis reached several key findings, including:
- The existence of numerous transformations that have driven women to enter the workforce, most notably social, economic, political, cultural, and legal changes.
- The diversity of reasons and factors contributing to role conflict among Yemeni working women, with family, economic, and personal factors being the most significant.
- The multi-dimensional effects of role conflict on working women, impacting themselves, their relationship with their family and social environment, and their professional performance.
The thesis recommended the following:
- A proposed program to train Yemeni working women in relevant and in-demand skills in the labor market for their economic empowerment.
- A proposed program for psychological and professional support for Yemeni working women for their economic empowerment, in light of service-oriented approaches to accepting their roles in work and society.
- Proposed solutions for balancing the roles of Yemeni working women from their own perspective.
The thesis was examined and recommended by the Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, interested individuals, in addition to the candidate’s colleagues and family members.
