Sana’a University President Chairs Meeting to Review Updates on WFME International Academic Accreditation Progress at Faculty of Medicine

Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bukhaiti, Rector of Sana’a University, chaired an expanded meeting today at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences dedicated to reviewing recent developments in the pathway toward international academic accreditation by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
The meeting was attended by the Rector’s Assistant for Medical Faculties and Hospitals, Prof. Abdulhafedh Thawaba; the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Al-Shahari; the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Hospitals, Prof. Anwar Al-Mughallis; the Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Prof. Arwa Othman; the Vice Dean for Quality Affairs, Prof. Ahmed Al-Mujahid; in addition to members of the Steering Committee.
At the outset of the meeting, the University Rector and attendees listened to a presentation delivered by the national quality expert, Prof. Saleh Bahaj, who reviewed the level of progress achieved toward meeting WFME international accreditation requirements and standards. The presentation highlighted accomplishments made during the past period in areas including academic governance, curriculum development, enhancement of the learning environment, assessment systems, and quality assurance, as well as the remaining requirements needed to reach full accreditation readiness.
In his remarks, Prof. Al-Bukhaiti affirmed that Sana’a University places the WFME international accreditation pathway at the top of its strategic priorities, reflecting its commitment to advancing the quality of medical education, aligning learning outcomes with global standards, and strengthening international recognition of its graduates and academic programs. He stressed the university’s commitment to providing all necessary institutional, technical, and logistical support to complete this vital pathway in accordance with its rigorous standards.
The Rector called for working in a spirit of teamwork and institutional responsibility, emphasizing the importance of translating plans and documents into effective practices within classrooms, teaching hospitals, and laboratories, in order to achieve the desired qualitative transformation in the quality of education and training.
In turn, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Al-Shahari, reaffirmed the faculty’s steady progress toward fulfilling WFME international accreditation requirements. He noted that the achievements realized to date represent a qualitative shift in the faculty’s academic and administrative structure, particularly in curriculum development, strengthening assessment systems, and embedding a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
He explained that this pathway reflects the faculty’s institutional commitment to academic excellence and to building a medical education model aligned with international best practices, confirming that faculty members, academic administrations, and specialized committees are working in an integrated manner to meet the requirements within the approved timeline.
The meeting included in-depth discussions on technical and procedural challenges, mechanisms to accelerate progress, and ways to unify efforts among various academic and administrative units, ensuring full readiness for accreditation in the coming phases.
It is worth noting that the meeting was attended by the University Secretary-General, Mr. Iskandar Al-Maqaleh; the Director General of Projects, Eng. Abdul Hakim Shamsan; and the Secretary of the Faculty of Medicine, Mr. Marwan Al-Mekhlafi.
The meeting comes as part of Sana’a University’s ongoing efforts to enhance its academic standing locally, regionally, and internationally, and to institutionalize a culture of quality and accreditation as a fundamental gateway to advancing medical education and serving the community.
