Sana’a University has awarded its first Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Cardiology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, marking a significant milestone in the development of medical education and postgraduate studies in Yemen.
The Rector of Sana’a University, Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bukhaiti, affirmed that the defense of the first MD dissertation in Cardiovascular Diseases—at both the university and national levels—represents a landmark scientific achievement. He noted that this accomplishment reflects the University’s growing capacity to generate advanced medical knowledge aligned with the health needs of society.
In his address at the scientific event hosted by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Al-Bukhaiti explained that this achievement signifies the University’s transition from traditional medical education to applied scientific research. He emphasized that the localization of specialized medical doctorate programs is a cornerstone for building a national healthcare sector grounded in competence and evidence-based practice, particularly in light of the rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
The occasion coincided with the public defense of the first MD dissertation in Cardiology, submitted by Dr. Hisham Ahmed Al-Haj Al-Faqih, a lecturer in the Department of Cardiology at the Faculty. This qualitative academic achievement reflects the institutional progress witnessed by medical postgraduate programs at Sana’a University.
The dissertation, entitled
“The Relationship between the High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein-to-Albumin Ratio and Coronary Artery Calcification Score and Coronary Artery Disease Assessment Systems Using Computed Tomography Angiography among Yemeni Patients,” examined the association between advanced inflammatory biomarkers, the degree of coronary artery calcification, and cardiac disease assessment systems using CT imaging. The study contributes to improving clinical diagnostic mechanisms for cardiovascular diseases among Yemeni patients.
The public defense was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Al-Shahari; the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Prof. Adel Al-Ghaili; national expert Prof. Saleh Bahaj; along with a number of academics, faculty members, and postgraduate students. The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Abdulnasser Ali Munibari (Main Supervisor) and Dr. Osama Hussein Al-Nono (Co-Supervisor). The viva voce committee was chaired by Prof. Ahmed Lotf Al-Mutrib (Chair and Internal Examiner), with Prof. Mohammed Ali Hussein Al-Houthi as External Examiner, and Prof. Abdulnasser Ali Munibari as a member.
At the conclusion of the defense, the viva voce committee approved the awarding of the MD degree in Cardiovascular Diseases to the researcher with Distinction, commending the advanced scientific level of the dissertation and its valuable, applicable research findings that can contribute to the development of clinical practice and medical research.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Mohammed Al-Shahari, stated that this achievement reflects the quality of the Faculty’s medical postgraduate programs and the high standard of academic supervision. He reaffirmed the Faculty’s commitment to further developing MD programs in accordance with modern academic standards and global advancements in medical education.
It is worth noting that this achievement comes within Sana’a University’s broader strategy to enhance clinical scientific research, expand specialized MD programs, and localize advanced medical knowledge, thereby contributing to the improvement of medical education quality and supporting the national healthcare sector.
