Sana’a University Honors and Rewards Three of its Scholars Recognized Among Stanford University’s List of Top 2% of Researchers Worldwide

In a significant celebration of academic excellence, Sana’a University awarded three of its esteemed scholars, recognizing their inclusion in the Stanford University list of the top 2% of researchers globally, based on citation metrics from the Scopus database. The honored scholars received certificates of appreciation and financial rewards totaling 2,250,000 Yemeni Riyals.
The event was held in alignment with the University’s commitment to promoting scientific research and encouraging scholars and researchers. It was organized under the auspices and guidance of the University Rector, Prof. Al-Kasem Mohammed Abass.
Prof. Al-Kasem Abass emphasized the paramount importance of scientific research and reaffirmed the University’s dedication to supporting its researchers across various disciplines. He congratulated the three scientists on their outstanding achievement, which brings great pride to the university and the nation. Prof. Abass highlighted the significance of their exceptional performance alongside peers from other Yemeni institutions in this highly competitive global ranking.
On behalf of the honored scientists, Dr. Ali Al-Muntaser delivered a speech expressing profound gratitude to the leadership of Sana’a University for organizing the generous and commendable event. He emphasized that this recognition will undoubtedly serve as a significant motivation for the honored scientists and their colleagues to continue their pursuit of excellence and innovation in scientific research and publication. Their future endeavors will focus on producing research that benefits local and international communities.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the three distinguished scholars were honored. Dr. Tareq Al-Shami, a faculty member at the Faculty of Education, has secured the first position in the lifetime citation rankings for researchers, with an impressive record of 136 publications between 2018 and 2024. He ranks 185,367 globally, amassing a total of 1,208 citations and achieving an h-index of 20. In the composite index for his subfield of general mathematics and the broader area of mathematics and statistics, he has a score of 3.2220. Moreover, Dr. Al-Shami ranked first among the most cited researchers for the year 2023, with a ranking of 9,805. He authored 136 papers, received 588 citations, and recorded an h-index of 13 for 2023, achieving a composite index score of 3.4481. This remarkable achievement underscores Dr. Al-Shami’s significant contributions to the field and highlights his ongoing commitment to research excellence at Sana’a University. Subsequently, he was granted a certificate of merit and a financial award of 1,000,000 YER.
In addition, Dr. Molham Al-Habori, a faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sana’a University, secured the second position among the honored scientists and the third position among Yemeni researchers on the aforementioned list, excelling in the category of most cited researchers over their careers, by publishing 51 papers from 1991 to 2024, ranking 206,623 globally. Dr. Al-Habori has garnered 2,091 citations and achieved an h-index of 22 for 2023. His composite index score in the subfield of medical biochemistry and the broader area of clinical medicine is 3.1755. Subsequently, he was granted a certificate of merit and a financial award of 750,000 YER.
At the same time, Dr. Ali Al-Muntaser, a faculty member at the College of Education and Applied Sciences in Arhab, secured the third position among the honored scientists and the eleventh position in the list of the most cited Yemeni researchers in the 2023 Stanford University list of the top 2% most cited scientists in the world. With 32 publications between 2018 and 2024, he ranked 326,172, accumulating 197 citations, an h-index of 8, and a composite indicator of 2.2831 in the sub-field of applied physics and the broader field of physics and astronomy. Subsequently, he was granted a certificate of merit and a financial award of 500,000 YER.
It is important to note that the list of the top 2% of the most cited researchers is a crucial tool for assessing the scientific impact of scholars. This list is based on comprehensive data from the Scopus database and ranks scientists according to various indicators, such as the number of citations derived from the h-index and the composite c-score.
The h-index is a measure of both the productivity and citation impact of published research. It measures both the quantity and quality of research output based on the publications of a scientist. The h-index is determined by the number of citations for each of a researcher’s publications. The purpose of this index is to improve the quality of scientific research by counting the number of published papers and the number of citations. This index compares research within the same field only, meaning each field is isolated from the others. This metric has been adopted by reputable universities as a fundamental requirement for academic promotion. On the other hand, the composite c-score evaluates scientific impact regardless of the number of publications, taking into account the different authorship roles, such as first or last author, in published research.
The celebration held at the Hall of the Business Administration Center, Faculty of Commerce, was attended by the University vice-rectors, the rector’s assistants, several faculty deans, directors of scientific and research centers, as well as a group of researchers and students.
