Sana’a University Launches “Al-Shahid Al-Ghumari” Football League with Participation of 17 Faculties

Under the auspices of Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bukhaiti, Rector of Sana’a University, the “Al-Shahid Al-Ghumari” Football League for the University Cup officially began today at the university’s central stadium. Organized by the General Directorate of Student Activities and Youth Welfare for the 2025–2026 academic year, the tournament features teams representing 17 faculties. It aligns with the university’s commitment to enhancing extracurricular engagement and nurturing students’ talents.
The league runs from 16 November 2025 to 14 January 2026, with teams divided into four groups following a single-elimination system designed to ensure balance and encourage healthy sports competition among students. Group One includes the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mass Communication, and Faculty of Dentistry. Group Two consists of the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Computer Science, and Facukty of Languages. Group Three brings together the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Sharia and Law, and Faculty of Physical Education. Finally, Group Four comprises the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Petroleum, and Faculty of Pharmacy.
During the opening ceremony, Prof. Al-Bukhaiti highlighted that hosting such a league reflects the university’s strong dedication to student activities, which play a crucial role in developing youth skills, fostering teamwork, and strengthening their sense of belonging. He stressed that the tournament offers a valuable opportunity to identify and refine students’ athletic capabilities in line with academic quality and accreditation standards. He also commended the General Directorate of Student Activities and Youth Welfare for its efforts in organizing the event.
Prof. Al-Bukhaiti further noted that the university is actively upgrading its sports infrastructure. He referred to a previous agreement with Dr. Mohammed Al-Mawlid, Minister of Youth & Sports, aimed at completing the indoor sports hall, expressing optimism that joint efforts will soon finalize the hall and turf the university’s central stadium.
The event was attended by Dr. Mohammed Shukri, the Vice Rector for Student Affairs; Mr. Adel Al-Hababi, the Rector’s Assistant for Media Affairs; and several coordinators of sports activities from various faculties.
The General Director of the Directorate of Student Activities and Youth Welfare, Mr. Abdulqader Al-Ghorbani stated that the league demonstrates strong student involvement and fosters sportsmanship across faculties. He emphasized the university’s commitment to providing a supportive campus environment that balances academic study with extracurricular activities.
Following the opening ceremony, the tournament opened with a match between the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Mass Communication from Group One. Engineering secured a 6–1 victory in the presence of a large student crowd within an enthusiastic, competitive atmosphere.
