Master’s Degree Awarded to Mr. Abdullah Hezam Ubad in Translation Studies

Mr. Abdullah Hezam Abdullah Ubad was awarded a Master’s Degree in Translation Studies with an average of excellent and a grade of (95) for his thesis titled: A Study of the Semantic Challenges Faced by Translation Students at Yemeni Universities in Translating English UN Humanitarian Terminologies into Arabic, which was submitted to the Department of Translation, Faculty of Languages – Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Wednesday, Sha’ban 23, 1447 Hijri, corresponding to February 11, 2026‎.

The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:

The study aimed to:
 Identify the semantic challenges faced by fourth-year translation students in Yemeni universities when translating United Nations terminology in the humanitarian context from English into Arabic.
 Assess the impact of these challenges on translation accuracy.
 Propose effective interventions to help mitigate these difficulties.
The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:
 Translation students face considerable difficulty in dealing with the semantic complexity of United Nations texts.
 Many students struggle to accurately interpret contextual and connotative layers of meaning.
 These challenges limit their comprehension of specialized humanitarian terminology used by the United Nations.
 There is a noticeable deficiency in applying non-literal translation strategies.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
 Developing comprehensive and accessible databases of United Nations terminology.
 Providing specialized training focused on resolving semantic ambiguity and systematically applying non-literal translation strategies.
 Producing professional and concise Arabic texts to enhance overall translation effectiveness.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
