Mr. Faisal Shoay Mohammed Hajj was awarded a Master’s Degree in Hematology with an average of Very Good and a grade of (89) for his thesis titled: Coagulation Profile in Yemeni Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia, which was submitted to Department of Hematology and Laboratory Blood Transfusion, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Sunday, Ramadan 5, 1447 Hijri, corresponding to February 22, 2026.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
# Committee Members Designation Position
1 Prof. Mohammed Abdulwahid Al-Muraish Internal Examiner Chair
2 Prof. Hassan Abdulwahab Al-Shamahi Main Supervisor Member
3 Dr. Mohammed Abdu Muraish External Examiner Member
The thesis aimed to evaluate coagulation indicators in patients with sickle cell anemia by measuring clotting times (PT and APTT) and D-dimer levels, assess natural anticoagulants through Protein C levels and platelet counts, and compare them with healthy controls to determine hypercoagulability risks.
The findings of the study showed:
A clear disturbance in the coagulation process, characterized by prolonged clotting times and significantly elevated D-dimer levels, indicating continuous activation of the coagulation system even during stable conditions.
A marked decrease in Protein C levels, with further reduction during vaso-occlusive crises.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
Including coagulation marker testing in the routine follow-up of sickle cell anemia patients.
Integrating thrombosis risk assessment into treatment protocols.
Conducting broader studies to enhance scientific understanding and develop more effective preventive strategies.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
