Mr. Mohammed Najeeb Qaed Abdullah Al-Banna was awarded a PhD degree in Microbiology with distinction for his dissertation titled: Molecular Characterization of Campylobacter Jejuni Isolated from Local and Imported Chicken Samples in Sana’a City, Yemen, which was submitted to the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science–Sana’a University. The dissertation defense was held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:
# Committee Members Designation Position
1 Prof. Hala Al-Jabouri Internal Examiner Chair
2 Prof. Saeed Mansar Al-Ghalibi Main Supervisor Member
3 Assoc. Prof. Adel Al-Eryani External Examiner Member
The dissertation aimed to:
Isolate, identify, and characterize Campylobacter jejuni bacteria from local and imported chicken samples in Sana’a City using molecular techniques
The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:
The prevalence rate of Campylobacter jejuni in the food chain in Sana’a City was moderate.
The researcher successfully discovered four new bacterial strains and documented them in the international gene bank under the designation Al-Bana M N H1-H4..
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
Expanding studies across Yemen to provide comprehensive data on bacterial prevalence, antibiotic resistance, and associated risk factors.
Focusing on molecular techniques in future studies and investigating the relationship between human infection and areas where birds, particularly poultry, are present.
The dissertation defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, and specialists, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
