7th Scientific Conference of the Military Heart Center Kicks Off

The 7th scientific conference of the Military Cardiac Center was launched today, Tuesday, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sana’a University. The conference, organized by the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff, and coordinated with the Military Medical Services Department, brought together medical professionals to discuss the latest advancements in cardiology.
In his opening speech, Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Al-Rahawi praised the conference, highlighting the ongoing scientific progress in the healthcare sector in the capital, Sana’a, particularly in specialized medical fields. Al-Rahawi emphasized that Yemen’s true wealth lies in its people’s intellect and that Yemeni minds are renowned for their creativity worldwide. He called for continued efforts to enhance the country’s capabilities and achieve significant accomplishments in various fields.
Member of the Supreme Political Council, Mr. Mohammed Ali, viewed the conference as a beacon of hope, reflecting the resilience of Yemenis in pursuing scientific progress despite challenging circumstances. Minister of Public Health and Environment, Dr. Ali Shaiban, emphasized that the conference provided an opportunity for development, innovation, and advancement. He highlighted Yemen’s highly skilled medical professionals and modern cardiac diseases and surgery equipment.
Dr. Shaiban commended the exceptional efforts of the Military Cardiac Center’s medical, surgical, and nursing staff. He noted that the center’s cardiologists and surgeons were actively engaged in scientific training and that the Ministry of Health was working to establish a specialized program for transcatheter valve replacement.
Prof. Al-Kassim Abbas, Sana’a University Rector, considered the 7th scientific conference a significant scientific event focused on heart diseases and surgery, that affect both old people and younger individuals. He emphasized the need for ongoing scientific research to keep pace with global advancements in cardiology.
The Director of the Military Medical Services Department, Dr. Abdulmohsen Hajjar, underscored the conference’s importance in keeping up with the latest medical, surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic advancements in cardiology, aiming to enhance the quality of services provided to heart patients.
Dr. Ali Al-Shami, Director of the Military Cardiac Center, explained that the conference would feature the presentation and discussion of numerous scientific research papers and six workshops, including ECG, echocardiography, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, transcatheter valve implantation (the first in Yemen), ventilator training, and a smart village designed to teach students basic skills in patient care using smart mannequins.
Al-Shami noted that the conference, with the participation of leading cardiologists from both inside and outside Yemen, would contribute to enhancing the skills of Yemeni cardiologists and surgeons through scientific sessions and training workshops. He highlighted the center’s success in conducting most medical interventions for patients according to the highest standards, reflecting its commitment to providing high-quality care. He further revealed that, as of mid-December 2024, the center had conducted over 421 open-heart surgeries, more than 4,612 diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterizations, and over 12,000 echocardiograms using the latest equipment.
The conference chair, Prof. Taha Al-Maimouni, emphasized that the event, with the participation of 4,000 physicians, represented a medical and scientific milestone that would contribute to enhancing the scientific level and practical performance of cardiologists and surgeons, as well as finding effective solutions for complex medical cases.
Dr. Walid Al-Sharafi, Deputy Director of the Military Heart Center, highlighted the conference’s goal of maximizing scientific knowledge and adopting global advancements in cardiology to further develop the capabilities of specialized Yemeni personnel.
The inaugural session was attended by Dr. Abbas Najm Al-Din, Director of the Military Hospital, along with directors of hospitals and medical centers, health ministry officials, and representatives from the Yemeni Medical Council and Sana’a University.
