Sana’a University Honors Top 100 Scientists According to Stanford and Scopus Global Rankings

Today, Sana’a University honored more than 100 of its academics and research scholars whose names appeared on the list of the world’s top 2% of scientists according to the Stanford University classification, and among the most prominent Yemeni researchers in the 2025 Scopus global ranking. The recognition was held in appreciation of their scientific achievements, which have elevated the name of Yemen and the university in international forums and contributed to enhancing the university’s standing in global rankings.
In his speech, the Secretary of the Supreme Political Council, Dr. Yaser Al-Houri, conveyed the greetings and congratulations of the President of the Supreme Political Council and its members to this distinguished group of honored scientists and research scholars, praising their research achievements that have elevated the status of Sana’a University and Yemen in regional and international arenas.
Dr. Al-Houri emphasized the commitment of the Revolution’s Leader and the President of the Supreme Political Council to supporting education and scientific research, considering it a fundamental pillar for national development and renaissance. He called for the establishment of a national fund to support and finance scientific research according to specific criteria.
He stated: “The current stage requires a qualitative leap in applied scientific research to serve development sectors and to direct research efforts toward addressing national priorities, security issues, and independence.”
Then, the Minister of Public Health and Environment, Dr. Ali Shaiban, praised the scientific achievement realized by Sana’a University in publishing more than 240 scientific papers in international journals through its own efforts, describing it as “a great national achievement added to the university’s rich record of successes.”
He stressed that “Scientific research in Yemen is not a luxury but a national necessity to address developmental challenges,” calling for the allocation of an annual budget to support research, encourage scientific publication directed towards community needs, and promote the investment of national resources in sustainable development.
The Deputy Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Hatem Al-Dois, praised Sana’a University’s initiative in honoring its elite researchers, considering it “a well-deserved recognition for Yemen’s scientists who have represented the nation honorably in global rankings.”
Dr. Al-Dois added: “Honoring researchers today affirms that the Yemeni people are capable of creativity and excellence despite challenges, and that universities must value their scholars and encourage them to further research and scientific productivity.”
He called for the continuation of the project to invest in research indicators. He also urged national universities to develop their research capacities and strengthen their academic environment to become more competitive regionally and internationally.
In his speech, the Rector of Sana’a University, Prof. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Bukhaiti, expressed his pride and appreciation for this scientific achievement, which the university has achieved, thanks to its distinguished cadres. He affirmed that this recognition serves as a culmination of its researchers’ efforts and supports the continuation of their journey of excellence and creativity.
Prof. Al-Bukhaiti noted that the university has witnessed a remarkable leap in scientific research and postgraduate studies over the past few years, with the number of master’s and doctoral programs rising to 240 academic programs compared to only 20 in 2015. He further affirmed that the university is currently working to obtain international accreditation for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
“The scientists of Sana’a University are the beating heart of Yemen, full of science and knowledge. They are the ones who have carried the banner of scientific research despite the scarcity of resources, setting an example of persistence and dedication,” the University Rector asserted.
The Director General of Scientific Research at the university, Dr. Hisham Al-Jabali, reviewed the journey of scientific publishing at the university over the past years. He explained that Sana’a University has made remarkable leaps in the number of research papers published in global databases, which has positively reflected on its standing in international rankings.
He noted that the university continues to implement its research strategy, which aims to support innovation and enhance academic and research partnerships with global universities and institutions.
On behalf of the honored researchers, Dr. Tariq Mohammed Al-Shami expressed gratitude to Sana’a University and its leadership for this recognition, emphasizing that global rankings are based on rigorous standards, foremost of which is the indexed scientific publication in trusted databases.
Dr. Al-Shami called for creating a stimulating research environment that supports scholars and provides them with the necessary time and resources for scientific production, saying: “We aspire to establish a National Center for Research and Innovation at Sana’a University to serve as a scientific platform that meets challenges and serves society.”
At the end of the ceremony, which was attended by a number of State officials, academics, the university’s vice rectors, and faculty deans. Besides, Prof. Al-Kassem Mohammed Abbas (Former Rector) and Prof. Ibrahim Luqman (Vice Rector for Graduate Studies and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research) were honored with the university shield, a gold medal, and certificates of appreciation.
The university also honored Dr. Tariq Mohammed Al-Shami, faculty member at the Faculty of Education, who ranked first in both Scopus and Stanford classifications for consecutive years; and Dr. Ali Ali Al-Muntasir, faculty member at the Faculty of Education in Arhab, who ranked sixth in Scopus and tenth in Stanford. In addition, the ceremony recognized over 100 distinguished male and female researchers from Sana’a University featured in the 2025 Scopus Global Ranking.
The event concluded with the performance of the national anthem of the Republic of Yemen and the taking of commemorative photos in a celebratory atmosphere that embodied the spirit of pride, sense of belonging, and deep appreciation for Sana’a University – Yemen’s First University.
