PhD Degree Awarded to Mr. Ahmed Al Kaina’ay in Translation Studies
Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al Kaina’ay was awarded a PhD degree in the major of Translation Studies for his dissertation titled, “An Analytical Study of the Ideology Effects in the Translation of Yemeni Political News,” which was submitted to Department of English Language, Faculty of Languages – Sana’a University. The PhD dissertation defense was held on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
The PhD Viva-Voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Post-Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following members:

The dissertation aimed to identify the nature of ideological manipulation in the translation of Yemeni political news and its impact on misleading public opinion.
The dissertation reached several important findings, the most significant of which are:
- Ideological Bias: Translators exhibit ideological bias when translating political discourse, particularly in the linguistic representation of events and individuals, with the aim of distorting the original political message.
- Non-Neutrality of Translation: Political translations are not neutral; rather, they reflect the power dynamics and political agendas at play in both the source and target cultures.
- Impact of Ideology: Translators’ choices are prominently influenced by ideological and political forces, which results in the alteration of the original message’s content and can lead to changes in the public’s perception of the reported events.
The dissertation presented several key recommendations, including:
- Translators and media institutions must prioritize accuracy and credibility when translating political discourse.
- Readers should be vigilant against falling prey to media disinformation by verifying news sources and engaging in comparison.
- Research institutions must pay greater attention to the ideological effects of translation in global and local media due to its significant role in the dissemination of rumors and misleading news.
- Media misinformation should be highlighted, and the public must be made aware of the roles that ideology plays in misleading public opinion.
The PhD dissertation was examined and recommended by the Viva-Voce Committee for acceptance and approval. The PhD defense was attended by a number of academics, researchers, interested students, the candidate’s colleagues, and family members.
