Master’s Degree Awarded to Mr. Basim Al-Akhali in Microbiology

Mr. Basim Mohammed Hameed Ahmed Al-Akhali was awarded a Master’s Degree in Microbiology with an average of excellent and a grade of (95%) for his thesis titled: Microbiological Quality of Some Meat and Meat Products in Yemen, which was submitted to the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science– Sana’a University. The MA defense was held on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
The MA Viva-voce Committee, which was formed based on a resolution issued by the Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Council, consisted of the following:

The thesis aimed to:
Evaluate the microbiological quality of some meat and meat products in Yemen.
Investigate new indicators of meat spoilage and deterioration.
The study yielded several key findings summarized as follows:
Imported samples showed higher compliance with microbiological standards compared to local samples.
Salmonella bacteria were the most prevalent in the examined samples, followed by Pseudomonas bacteria, which emerged as a new indicator of meat spoilage and deterioration.
In light of these findings, the researcher recommended the following:
Implementing good hygiene practices and good manufacturing practices, as well as controlling critical points during meat production.
Strengthening the cold chain and enforcing stricter regulations related to meat production.
Training and improving the qualifications of workers involved in meat selling and handling.
Urging the relevant authorities to consider including Pseudomonas testing within the approved microbiological standards for evaluating the quality of meat and meat products.
The defense session was attended by a number of academics, researchers, students, colleagues, and the researcher’s family.
